Lauren was 15 years old, and a sophomore at South Plantation High School in Plantation, Florida. On April 26, 2003 she and her father were participating in the "MS150 Breakaway to Key Largo" bike tour to benefit Multiple Sclerosis research. After riding for approximately 30 miles, under rainy conditions, Lauren was struck and killed by a reckless, unlicensed driver.

Lauren's father, Dave, had earlier suggested dropping out of the ride for that day, due to the inclement weather; but Lauren wanted to persevere and complete the first day's 75 mile course even though she was wet and uncomfortable. It was shortly thereafter that Lauren was killed.

... A Singer

Lauren was a straight-A honors student. She enjoyed singing. She sang in the bathroom, shower, in her room and she was singing out loud while she was riding her bike in the bike tour. Some of her favorite songs are from Disney movies, as well as from Broadway shows.

Lauren was also into popular music and could learn the words to songs on the radio very easily. She was always up on the latest new singers or groups.

Lauren and her dad shared an interest in new music, and Lauren always seemed able to know which singers or groups her dad would like. They very often shared CD's.

... On the run

Upon entering high school, Lauren developed an interest in running. She joined the school's Cross Country team as a freshman, even though she had no prior experience as an athlete. She enjoyed being a member of the team and attending daily practices as well as participating in meets.

Along with Cross Country, Lauren also joined the track team, running the mile. Her times progressively improved throughout the season. She continued to run on both teams again in her sophomore year as well.

Unfortunately, Lauren would be unable to run in her last race of the season at the District track competition -- as it was held the week following her death.

... A Renaissance Girl

Lauren was also a member of the Paladin Society at South Plantation High School. This is a club that allows its members to learn all they can about the middle ages and Renaissance periods of Europe. They create their own garb (period clothing) and learn about and practice the customs of the time.

Lauren particularly enjoyed learning the period dancing and could rattle off many bits of information that an apothecary of the time would know. She enjoyed participating in the annual Florida Renaissance Festival in Deerfield Beach as well as the Italian Renaissance Festival in Miami.
